Virechana Panchakarma – Traditional Ayurvedic Purgation Therapy

Virechana is one of the five classical Panchakarma procedures described in Ayurveda. It involves controlled, medicine-induced purgation and is traditionally associated primarily with the elimination of aggravated Pitta Dosha.

At Athang Ayurved, Virechana is considered only after an Ayurvedic assessment and appropriate patient selection.

What Is Virechana?

Virechana Karma is a planned therapeutic procedure in which specially selected Ayurvedic medicines are used to induce controlled purgation.

Unlike ordinary digestive upset or diarrhea, therapeutic Virechana is a structured Panchakarma procedure carried out according to an Ayurvedic protocol.

Ayurvedic references describe Virechana as a procedure primarily directed toward aggravated Pitta Dosha.

What Does the Process Involve?

Depending on the individual’s condition, the Panchakarma process may include:

  • Initial Ayurvedic consultation
  • Assessment of Prakriti and current condition
  • Appropriate preparatory measures
  • Dietary preparation
  • Administration of selected medicines
  • Supervised therapeutic purgation
  • Observation and monitoring
  • Post-procedure dietary care

The exact medicines, preparation and procedure vary from person to person.

Why Is Individual Assessment Necessary?

Panchakarma is not a generic detox program. Traditional Ayurvedic practice emphasizes proper patient selection and consideration of indications and contraindications before performing Virechana.

For this reason, self-administering strong purgative medicines without professional guidance is not recommended.
